Margin vs. markup: what's the difference?
Margin is your profit as a share of the price. Markup is your profit as a share of your cost. They describe the same profit, so mixing them up is one of the most common pricing mistakes.
- A job that costs you $100 and sells for $150 has a $50 profit.
- That's a 33.3% margin ($50 ÷ $150) but a 50% markup ($50 ÷ $100).
- If you add 30% to your costs expecting a 30% margin, you'll actually get about 23%.
